Talk me down? 2002 FE400

Found an '02 FE400 locally that's in good shape from the looks of it. I was looking for a Honda XR400R or XR650R, but this one's a fair bit cheaper and I like to have something different from the crowd as well. The Husa name takes me back to my youth along with the old Huskies and the Combat Wombat.

After reading the FAQ's, I'm trying to figure out how much of this stuff applies to the bike I'm talking about. Great documentation by the board on known issues, but its all but scared me off. I won't be racing this bike, but will be riding in the woods with the kids and wife and going fast on some of Michigan's trails with buddies from time to time.

Mostly, I'd like to find some owners of that particular model and year and get their real world experiences with the bike. It'll be no bargain if I save $1000 versus a honda and then turn around and dump that money right back into it (plus lose riding time in the process). I've owned a KTM recently and have a Triumph street bike, so the Euro brands in general don't scare me off - but I want to make a good decision on a dirt bike that I hope will last me at least five years of recreational riding.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Q

the 2002 fe 400 and the fe 501 seem to be pretty solid bikes with no more than normal failure rate.there is no reason to try to recreate the wheel when you own a 4 year old dirtbike.you ride them, maintain them and hope for the best.i just took a 2002/ 501 in trade with no fears.it was well taken care of and runs as new and will make someone smile alot for under $3000.the stator seems to be the only thing that fails with enough frequency that i wish to mention, but it is not the end of the world.if the bike you are considering is in good shape and has not been riden to death ,buy it.dan.

Regarding 2001 through 2004 Husaberg engines:
The 400 has proved to be the most reliable.

Many engine components are common with the larger versions and as such one may possibly go so far as to to state the 400 is "over built " for it's displacement and power output.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
Dale

i have a 2002 400FEe and i put the doc together with a lot of help and it's based around my steed. if the initial jobs are done it just leaves the stator as mentioned by dan.

i'd get one and save the money. facy working on it yourself? this is the bike to do it on.

regards

Taffy

I wish I lived closer to MI, I'd buy that bike in a second at that price! ... plus you get the PE400 that you could sell later and get some money back to put into the Husaberg.

Plus the "local" Husaberg dealer, Euro Motors in Davison MI, is not too far away.

Well, I checked it out today and did the deal. I'll pick it up in a couple days. The bike looks solid, has a Baja kit on it, heated grips, a new rear tire and started on the 2nd kick. The PE400 is interesting, too. Its not running, but is in pretty good shape for 25 years old and he has several boxes of new parts that he purchased in expectation of restoring it. Between the two, I know what I'll be doing this winter in my new, heated garage.

I'm going to go talk to the guys at Euro Motors on Tuesday before I pick it up to get some personal recommendations on what/when to work on with the Husa.

Congratulations with your new bike. I´ve had a XR 400, now i have a FE 400 E 2001 as a spare bike. The XR sucks BIG time compared to the BERG. The BERG is easier, has a lot more power, better suspension, e-start. I had more problems with the XR than i´ve had with the BERG, and it´s living a hard life!!
