New 650 owner questions

I will be accepting delivery of a 2006 650 fe in a week or so. Can you guys throw me some suggestions on break-in, maintenence, and things I should tighten or fix before I ride it? My current bike is a 520 MXC KTM, which has been basically flawless, other than the usual shifter always loosening itself. Are there any peculiarities associated with the 650, or any common problems with the 2006 year? I am antsy as hell waiting for a new toy.....trying to make sure I have all the necesities before the first ride. I ride pretty much strictly in the high mountains of western Montana. Any carberation suggestions for 6,000 to 9,000 ft elevation?

shameless and self serving promotion?

Jet Kit

However, said kit maintains roughly a 99% satisfaction rating.

Re: New 650 owner questions

I guess the first thing to ask is, where are you getting the bike from? Some dealers will rejet the bike before delivery. I have heard of others going as far as regreasing the steering stem and swingarm bearings before delivery (not that is likely necessary).
If the bike is coming to you in the factory crate without PDI, you will need to consider addressing these issues.
As far as jetting, I use the Lineaweaver jet kit with a 160 main. It seems to work well from 2000-8000 ft for me. I have never ridden above 8000.
My opinion for breakin is... 1/2 throttle, no deep sand of long hill climbs for the first tank. 3/4 throttle for the second tank. By the end of the third tank you should be ridding it like you stole it . You do not want to baby the bike or lug the engine during breakin as the rings may not seat and the cylinder may glaze. I would say it is much better to err on the aggressive side.
Engine oil....I prefer to break them in (after the intial oil change) with Delo 400. I would use it for the first 4 or 5 oil changes, changing the oil after every ride. I inspect and clean the oil screen during every oil change, replace the filter every 3 or 4.
Lube the chain and clean the air filter after every ride. It helps to have a second air filter so you always have one prepped and ready.

These are just my opinions, and of course as always.....I may be wrong
