Re: I feel sorry for all you guys in Arizona

Here's some pretty good info on DST. Looks as though our Ben Franklin, and a Britt had a lot to do with it!!

http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/

Sometimes I wish "they" wouldn't make us change the clocks. In my line of work, I work wheter it's light or dark. In the winter it seems like I go to work in the dark and come home in the dark. About the only advantage for me is that I wake up with the birds no matter what on my days off, I can't seem to sleep once it's light outside. So, I guess that means I sleep a little later in the summer time. Although, I still wake up everyday @ 0500 b/c that's what time I usually get up.

Since we are having a "time" discussion here, here is a trivia question.
Who was the man who came up with and implemented the concept of greenwich mean time and dividing the world into time zones? What was the incentive for this ?

His name was mr ZULU, and it was done so that you can fly your Cessna around the Four Corners states in the summer and still know what the heck time it is in Nevada... I think.

Arizona does not observe DST except for the overly friendly Navajo Nation in the 4-corner area (Berger, Splat and Taffy can testify of the overly friendliness).

Hawaii does not observe DST either. Aloha!

Re: I feel sorry for all you guys in Arizona

time to end this thread till oct.

In 1845 a young surveyor from scotland immigrated to Quebec canada. He gained employment in the railway in the period of transcontinential expansion and gained his civil engineering degree. As chief engineer for the intercontentental railway which reached from the Atlantic ocean to the Pacific Ocean he found setting train shedules to be a nightmare as each town and city was on their own time clock.Sanford Fleming invented what he called standard time, which divided the world into 24 equal time zones,so he could create a viable train shedule. With the support of the head of the US weather service he petitioned the British Govt to use GMT as the starting point as they had created a system of standard time in britain for their trains some years earlier. He was Knighted by Queen Victoria in 1897 and was given the title as the" Father of standard time"
Sir Sanford Fleming 1827-1915

Strangely enough there is a party every nite at the "Dateline Hotel " in Nukualofa ,Kingdom of Tonga as they celebrate the start of the worlds new day.
