1999 FE400

I've found a 99 FE400 (kickstart-only) that I'm considering buying, supposedly with only 2100 miles. I'm fairly confident it's a good bike; my concerns focus mostly on parts/maintenance/reliability. There's no dealer nearby that I'm aware of (western SC), but I'm a fair shade-tree mechanic.

Does anyone have any tips on that model? Is it especialy expensive to maintain? Are the valves shim or screw-type? Any other components that are prone to failure (seems I read something about stators going bad)?

I don't intend to race it, mostly just trail riding. I found some threads on various other forums, and the consensus there seemed to be that the Husabergs became a lot more reliable after 1999.

I'd appreciate any comments.

Welcome aboard! You are in luck with your purchase.... A resident guru (Taffy) has the 400 bike but I believe it is an '02 model. Taff has put together "The Owners Document" for download here on this wonderful site and should answer about 98% of all your questions. I will set you up with THE LINK to download the document and this should get you started. Happy reading!

You can find a lot of information here and if you have a question some one sooner or later to answer it. There is a link for Dealers that you can try. The closest dealer I deal with locally is Funcycles in Valdese, NC. What part of western SC are you at? Here is a phone number: 828-874-4680 that is for Funcycles. Hope this helps.

Re: 1999 FE400

I have a 97 FE400E that I bought with zero time on it in 2000....still have it and love it. I think that the 99 is generally the same bike, i.e. engine etc. The rockers are the screw type adjustment.

I had it for about 20 hours of riding time and the intake rocker broke, which threw the camchain. The new rocker I ordered was an upgraded item. Not sure if the 99 came with the new upgraded rocker.

About 2 years ago I had to replace the stator and 6 months ago I had to replace a piston with a cracked dome.

Other than that, the bike has been great. It ought to be good for western SC riding. Years ago I used to ride the GA and SC ORV areas, and I wish I would have had the Berg then. Would have been the perfect bike.

Good luck.

Re: 1999 FE400

Hi there,

I think the kickstart only is a good bike in that year. It was the first of the reversed ignitions that run cooler had have firing changes.

They handle well as well, where the electric start model has weight problems.

If only the km you say it would be good. Check speedo works though and sprocket and tyres for being original.

Check the roller rockers for where and tapet adjustment. The hammering of loose tappets go towards the roller rocker problem.

The newer bikes with the new frame handle better, but the seat on the 99 and the right side up forks have some benefit. Easy bike to work on.

good luck.
