Hi all,

Great site, I've been searching away for a while but can't really find the info I'm looking for so thought I would just ask.

I'm looking at swapping my dr650 for a 2005 fe550. My brother used to have a 502 and I loved it.

My question is, the owner doesn't know how many hours the bike has on it. The bike looks clean as and comes with a bunch of spares which is good. Should i immediately tear it down and do a full rebuild on it. Or should I just check a few important things to make sure it runs ok.

For the record I am planning on using the bike on a Simpson desert crossing (500k outback ride in the middle of Australia).

I understand that the cases need to be split to do a rebuild on the 550 which is a little bit daunting. I have experience on 2 stroke rebuilds but not something of that complexity.

put a few hours testing in first. set the bike up, get a feel for it. the engione rebuild may come sooner than you think!

I agree with Taffy.

Listen for knock down low, check oil for metal (mine always has some small sparkle - clutch - straight cut transmission, etc. in the oil) as big flakes (Christmas tree on your magnet) is a likely sign of main bearing wear.

Berg motors are noisy, but it's mostly valve train and induction noise. Knocking and or odd vibration is a symptom rebuild is coming up soon.

If no knock and an acceptable amount of metal in oil, change the oil, and ride the hell out of it. Rebuilds are a matter of when, not if.
