Fork seals

There is a Tech Tip on TT under the suspension subheading that explains a possible fix for fork seals that are leaking due to contamination. Info might be valuable some day, especially to 97-99 owners!

That sounds interesting. Unfortunately I`am not a member of TT. Could you give a link so can read the tech tip. Thanks.

huh, does it?

does it perchance involve sliding film in between the fork tube and seal?

thanks,

Dan , I would also be interested in the link to this tip. I pulled out my bike the other day to find one fork leaking like a sieve. It was dry the last time out.
Schwim, If you see this post , fill me in on the deal with sliding film between the seal and tube.
I'm gonna be sending my forks out for stiffer springs and a revalve job , but a could use a quick fix (if there is one) for the next few rides.

Here is the TT link:

Here is the post about using a business card:

"You might be able to fix the problem without taking them apart. Remove the fork guards, and pry down the dust wiper on the forks. Then take a business card and slip the corner of it up into the fork leg between the lower tub and the seal ( very carefully), then move the card all the way around the tube. Do this a couple times, then wipe everything down, and clean out the dust wiper as much as possible. Put it all back together and about 75% of the time your problem will be solved.

If you are low on oil, you can add some through the top fork cap. Also, if you are somewhere you can't get fork oil, you can use tranny fluid in a pinch....

Its real important to keep your seals and fork legs real clean all the time, cause most fork seal leaks happen when dirt gets crammed up into the seal. The seal is usually still ok, but the dirt is trapped in there causing it to leak. The proceedure above usually fixes this problem."

I use a 35mm film negative instead of a business card.

Sorry a bit late, but been away. The link posted isn't the one I was referring to, but it is close enough. The one I was referring to used the film negatives rather than a business card. On another note, How do you post a link?
