Want to get a 2010 FE450 street legal in California

Is there any way in this world to make a 2010 Husaberg FE450 street legal?
The Bike has an Arizona plate right now.
So far I can get it registered as a California off-road bike, although I would like to be able to ride the streets to the dirt track.

Are there any tricks and tweaks out there to pass this bike

Shortly and simply, no.

AFAIK, if a bike model was never available as a CARB certified street model in California, then there's no way to get it registered as a street legal vehicle. Also, once it is registered as an Off-road vehicle, that's all it can ever be.

There are many examples of people using questionable means to obtain a plate in CA, and while you may have a plate on the bike when riding around, it's still not "legal". In face the DMV has been known to "notice" their mistakes and issue a request for the return of an erroneously registered plate.

There's also the questionable legal state, that if you were ever to claim on [street] insurance, the insurance company could turn around and deny the claim if they found the vehicle was not 100% legal (I know, slim chance, but still - we live in a land of lawyers).

There is one "trick", I believe.

As long as the bike has all the emissions equipment as it was delivered from the factory (might not be applicable), you can pay CARB about $20k to certify that make/model/year as compliant. *Then* you can register it

The Bike is street legal with a registration plate in AZ,
Is there something called, "Arizona non resident registration" that could work?

It can be done. I know cause I have one plated in my garage.

It all hinges on this form: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg31.pdf
Reg 31 Verification of Vehicle.

If you go to the DMV to register it as a street legal vehicle, you'll get many forms including Reg 31. Section 6 and 8 are the two most important sections.

6 refers to the FMVSS status (lights, reflectors, horn, etc). This can be worked around with a Brake and Lamp certificate from a licensed dealer.
8 refers to the emissions status and usually the most troublesome since the FE's emission sticker does not certify it for on-road use.

The DMV or CHP can do the inspection. I've heard that DMV's are getting lax about the inspection since they'd rather have your money than be CARB's lackeys. The DMV got a couple hundred bucks out of me that they would not have gotten if they had turned me down.

All that said, you need a Reg 31 that is filled out appropriately to allow the DMV to give you a plate. That's it. Everything else is noise. That form + insurance + reg fees = plate.

The fact that you have an Arizona plate does not simply the process at all. The only thing it may save you is from the brake and lamp check. Maybe

Official DMV page about dual-reg: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/reg_hdbk/ch15/ch15_15.htm Scroll down to "On-Highway Registration—The requirements are:"

Good luck.

I did nothing questionable at all. I added the proper lights and horn to my FE450 and had it inspected by a police officer. No bribes, blackmail, buddy hookups or altered or fraudulent decals. I did it 100% by the book like the DMV wants.

Having over 7,500 miles on the odometer will greatly increase your chance of getting a plate.

I have a Ca legal fe 2010 450

Bought in new and avoided a chp inspection.

Had to register dual, first then plated. it is how you have to do it for a new bike or they wont let it go.

You have to have 7500 on the bike. if you do not, and try to register it, they will permanantly red flag you due to your out of state plate.

Why not just leave it AZ plated?

If you have an AZ address you can get GEICO insurance really cheap for the AZ address and you are good to go!

If you get stopped and the FUZZ give you a hard time about having a PRK drivers license (CA), you just tell them you have a vacation home at the address listed on the AZ registration and you brought the bike out here for a short while.

Your registration will be way cheaper and you won't need to deal with the PRK's BS.
