Looking at my first Husaberg -- 2004 FE450e

Hey guys, I'm new to the world of the Husaberg. I was planning on buying a KTM, but can't seem to find one in my price range. I did find a Husaberg however. It's a 2004 Husaberg FE450e. The engine was rebuilt after 160 hours, and it has 40 hours on the new rebuild.

The bike has a 2006 radiator and tank/plastic update.

I'm going to be using the bike for a dual sport, and will be doing about 50/50 with it. I don't plan on doing a ton of freeway though, maybe 15-20 miles max. I would imagine that a Husaberg could handle this, provided I change the oil religiously? I know the bike isn't really 'made' for highway per-say, but that doesn't mean it can't do it; as I know even though the KTM's aren't made for it, the EXC/XC-W's can run 70mph all day long provided the rider's arse can take it.

My essential question is this:

Is there anything I need to watch out for in the 2004? How is the 2004 reliability compared to say, a KTM RFS engine of the same year?

I just don't want to make a big money mistake and wish I would have just waited around for a Katoom is all.

Oh, I should also say that there isn't a single Husaberg dealer in my entire state, so any problems I have, I'll need to work on and fix myself. Are they easy enough to work on?

I have an 06 and they are easy to work on and parts are only a call away.
Lot of KTM parts on them only engine and frame are differant.

Sounds like the 1 for sale in nPA.

i did a lot of googling around for known issues on the FE570 and posted the results here, and guys have kept adding to it:
http://husaberg.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=16204

in effect that will be most relevant for 2009+ 390s, 450s and 570s but possibly some of the issues will be the same for earlier models? if you do come up with a list it might be worth starting a similar thread for pre-2009 bergs?

you may need to have a new auto decomp spring if the battery is straining to start it. if you kick start it and hit a solid wall then it needs doing IDEALLY!

if the starter gears slip then againa cheap and simple repair.

other than that...great! maybe some have had a valve head snap or spring break but that is very, very rare. It has to be said that they are reliable.

I have a 450e, and I street it some...well, when I can manage to go more than 25' without hurting myself. I love it. It will happily run with anything as long as your ass can take it. I giggle immensely when I feel the wheel pulling gently off the ground as I slap gears to it. I have on a cheap arse set of Kendas as an experiment and I gotta tell you, they work suprizingly well! Enjoy it, mine has been trouble free so far!! well, 'cept when I hit stuff.....heehehheee....

Hey All,

For what it's worth, I ended up buying the bike that this original posting is talking about.

Turned out to be a really nice bike! I ride mostly dirt roads and trails with it, so far I've put about 50 hours on it, no issues yet besides a horn that fell off....

I don't think it would have been fun on the expressway though.
