Cam Chain Replacement

Looks like i will soon need to replace the cam chain on my FE400.

Is there an easy and hard way of doing this ?
Also to test the tensioner is it just a case of un bolting it from the engine ?

I`ve never done one but want to give it a go.

Cheers Bob.

Re: Cam Chain Replacement

You may just need an upgraded cam chain slipper as I did with my 02' 501 without replacing the chain. This is what rides between the tensioner and chain. The upgraded version will keep the chain from rubbing the case. My mechanic did this so unfortunately, I can't help with the ~how to~.

Scroll down this page and you'll see the slipper I'm talking about.

Re: Cam Chain Replacement

Break the old chain and join the new chain to the old. Then turn over motor until it comes to the top. Remove tensioner and re set it. Stuff some cloths or paper towel around things when you are breaking and joining the chain so you don't lose a link or clip in the engine.

Re: Cam Chain Replacement

To test cam chain tensioner,
put engine in TDC, unscrew center bolt on tensioner, remove bolt, spring and washer, after that release other two screws on tensioner and you can take it out to see how many clicks on push rod you left.
take care to not destroy gasket under tensioner.

regards

I didn't move the engine when I changed mine on my 650. At TDC, I took a picture or two of the cam gear so I could make sure it was put back together right. I safety wired the new chain to the old and it jiggled around the lower cog fairly easily.

I took the CCT and the tensioner blade off first obviously.
