850 miles in a week

I just returned from riding 850 miles of Death Valley last week. The riding was perfect and the 2011 FE570S handled everything well. We tried to avoid the pavement as much a s possible, and probably averaged a 70-30 pavement/asphalt ratio.

The bike now has almost 2400 miles on it and the only problems I can report having is the battery had to be replaced (covered by warranty), and now a couple other small issues. The kick stand spring went missing when the small cam device it attaches to broke. Looking at the design of the cam, I believe this will be an ongoing issue with this bike. I don't know yet if the warranty will replace these parts. Also, while I washed the bike, I noticed the chainguard has cracked and needs to be replaced. I haven't even called the dealer on that yet.

Anyway, neither issue is a major problem. All in all, I'm pretty happy with the new bike.

Re: 850 miles in a week

I'm going to do a week in Moab with any luck this year and should be clocking somewhere around the same mileage you stated. Did you change oil during that time? I usually change oil after every couple rides so was thinking of bring a setup to change oil in the canyon, at least once during the week.

I have over 1000 miles on my 2011FE570S and have had zero failures. My biggest complaints so far are just nit picks really. My sticker kit was poorly done and the number plate sticker so bad I had to pull it off after one ride. Others were also poorly done (is that done at the factory or at the dealer?). The headlight sucks, period. I didn't realize that the blue wheels were only for the dirt i.e. silver wheels on the "S" model. I wanted blue dammit. Thankfully I haven't run into all the issues with goo in the tank or overheating fuel pump but I took preventative measures.

Glad to see another one of the good stories...nothing broke, not stranded, running good...having fun. Sometimes on the boards you start to think there's nothing but problems but people don't often come here when things are going right since they're out riding.

Ride On...

Re: 850 miles in a week

Yeah, nice to hear good reports about the bike here too. Yes I changed the oil once in DV, but i already had 650 on the oil when I showed up for the ride. I would have been comfortable with doing the whole week on one fresh oil change. This is from experience. I've been riding a 2005 KTM 525 that I've put 35,000 miles on. Since new, I've tried to change the oil using the full synthetic Motorex reccomended by the factory. The frequency has been between 1200 and 800 miles depending on trip length, availability and usage (how hard it was ridden). In those 35,000 miles I had to replace one cam follower that had the inner brass bushing fail. There have been no other failures, not even a clutch replacement and it is still going strong. Every oil change, I clean all screens and replace the filter(s). That said, the Husaberg carries more oil capacity than the KTM, so it should be capable of a little longer distances without an oil change without worry. I know that is not in the manual, but my experience tells me it is sound.

Now a couple of other issues I've run into that are very minor, but I would want to consider if I was you. The headlamp bulbs short out and fail with extreme off road use. When they short, they kill the whole electrical fuse link with the engine too (fuse #5). To eliminate this, I installed a toggle on the left number plate supprt where you can easily reach it if needed while riding. The toggle turns off the highbeam and leaves the small safety light illuminated. As soon as I hit the dirt, I turn off the headlamp with the switch and keep the highbeam activated off road. If I hit a piece of pavement, I'll turn the bar control to low beam and have a headlamp illuminated and if necesary, I switch the toggle and have both high and low available. I'm on my third bulb, and since I've done this mod, I've had no more blown bulbs or problems losing fuse #5.

The little kick stand bracket that partially kicks the stand back is very weak. The bracket broke and I lost both springs. It was $28 to replace these. I looked at the 450 and I plan on eliminating the gromet on the kickstand bolt which will eliminates the partial stand closure and should kill this problem too.

Be careful to keep the chain properly adjusted, I had the chain cut through the plastic support on the inside of the chain guard. This is an $8 part.

As of right now, I've got 2100 miles on the bike and am extremely happy with the performance and the bike overall. Like you, I've had a few glitches, but nothing too major and considering the stuff I like to ride, relly I would not count any of this as unusual.

The one thing preventative that I did do was to install a Can-Am fuel injection filter in line by removing the quick disconnect in the fuel line. I got this from the Australian rally teams web site and I've had no fuel injection issues, so I am going to say it has been a good modification.

That's about all I can think of right now. Enjoy your ride.

Oh yeah, i forgot. I traded the silver wheels for the black excells with $400 when I purchased the bike. Sorry, I didn't like the blue or the silver, but the blacks look greeat.
