stator again

got a 2003 fc550.its been running great all summer.starts one or two kicks hot or cold.i brought it back home from where i ride and gave it a good clean.i started it up after the wash and it ran perfect.i left it a couple of days then went to start it and this is where the problems started
the bike started on choke as normal but cut out as soon as choke was turned off.this progressed to not starting at all.i thought it was a petrol related problem so have been chasing that way for last 2 days.saw a spark at the plug yesterday but not today so i checked the stator [black to red black to green] and figures were fine so checked all other connections to plug.eventually swopped the stator off my fs650 and it started first kick.have swopped back and to and it is the stator even though readings ok.the stator has only lasted about 20 to 25 hrs at the most.at 200 quid a pop this cant be normal or is it?

Re: stator again

Have you had your stator rewound by "sparks" yet? That seems to be the end all cure all.

Re: stator again

it is one he got from sparks I'm afraid. I wasn't involved.

I have not seen DaveW's stator but he has called me and knows that I have them in stock. other stators that were perfect are showing vast quantities of steam and vapour when heated. one suspects that the owner's have therefore changed stators but not stopped the cause of the problem and that is water entering via the tube itself, around the tube or bung or thirdly: via the cover itself.

Re: stator again

Hi Dave,

If you are still getting the correct resistance readings it's possible it is water or moisture related, put the stator in the oven for an hour at 90C to 100C to stove out any moisture that could be in there, if that fails get in touch, or feel free to get in touch anyway.

Re: stator again

hi
i have had it in the oven like you said but still no spark but figures still ok.the stator was very hot when i took it out so cant see any moisture still there .the problem went from the bike only running on choke [would cut out as soon as choke switched off ] to not starting but there was a spark,to not starting and no spark.all the time the figures have been within spec.

Re: stator again

Hi Dave,

This is a strange one, you had better send it back to me for further investigation and rectification.
