Re: 2005 FE650E

Nice.
I found an 05 FE450 with low hours...in Nashville. I looked forever for a 650. I'm a big guy and really would like the extra oomph... I suppose my only plan is to enjoy this 450, and in a year or two...Buy a new 570..!!!
Enjoy!!!

Re: 2005 FE650E

I have a few drops of oil dripping out of the bottom of the ignition cover.

Overfilled oil....maybe a crank seal??...
New to this engine design, but that's where I'd start.. Good luck.

Re: 2005 FE650E

Well, I have a set up and ride report on my 650.
I changed to oil and warmed the bike up. The oil seems to have stopped leaking out of the ignition cover. I did take the cover off and clean it up in there. When I filled the oil I noticed that the oil fill neck was different from
my other 05 650. I remember the change spoken of here. The 650 I just bought with 34 hrs was manufactured in 7/04. And my modded 650 with 140hrs was manufactured in 11/04. It has the oil fill neck angled and is easier to fill. The one I just bought has the straight fill neck. Hard to get the funnel in there .
The suspension came with 48 fork springs and 8.5/11.1 rear spring. The guy that owned it was a little heavier than me I guess. I weight 210lbs with gear and my setup on my modded bike is 44 fork and 81/9.5. I like it so I new this new setup was going to feel stiff.
So I checked the clickers and the previous owner had the fork compression at 10 clicks out and rebound at 5 out.
That surprised me. Then I checked the rear that felt real firm and the spring was cranked down so far that I barely got 80mm rider sag out of it. The clickers were stock.
So I loosened it up and got my desired 103-105 rider sag with around 35mm static
For clicker set up went with what I have on my other bike for a starting point.
Fork compression 18 and rebound 17. Shock compression 18 rebound 22.
I checked the valves and they were close but a few a little loose at 1/4 turn out.
I got them all at 1/6 out
I put new tires and tubes on.
Set controls to my liking and went for a ride today. I took some easy trails because the skid plate is on order.
The bike runs and idles great at 3,000 feet. And the suspension worked together well but like I thought was
too stiff front and back. Not unbearable but I will test next time with 2 clicks softer compression front and rear.
The fork rebound feels right on. The front doesn't push or knife it at all and seemed to turn very well and predictably.
Overall I was very pleased with the first ride. It needs some fine tuning and some guards for discs , radiator
and a BRP chain guide.
