MX a FX450 for an old vet rider?

Hey all, I'm new to the site. I'm a 47yr old 6"4" 225lb Vet mxer. I had some injuries so my finish at the front of the pack days are most likely over, that's ok, I'm in it for fun, just want to race with my ole buds . I recently dusted off my 06 KX450 and raced a vet class out back, had a blast, never thought I'd be able to do it again. I'm really interested in a hold over 2010 FX450 Berg with some extras included. Sweet looking bike with good usable power it looks like... A vet mx bud of mine races a CR450X and is very happy with it, gotta run for now but any help, suggestions are much appreciated, Happy Riding

Re: MX a FX450 for an old vet rider?

The FX is a great bike, and the rider will still make the most difference, but with two equally skilled riders a real motocrosser will have a pretty big advantage on a MX track. The heaviest motocross four stroke is still 20 pounds lighter than the FX, and the FX suspension, while valved stiffer than the FE, is still pretty soft for real MX. The close ratio gear box on the FX is moto-ready, though.

The FX makes a better all around ride though, by far, if you ever venture off the moto track and do other types of off road riding. I love mine. Oh and comparing it against your friend's 450X, I'd say you have an advantage everywhere, except maybe racing the Baja 1000.

Re: MX a FX450 for an old vet rider?

Thanks Johnf3, That's pretty much what I wanted to hear..lol. I'm usually a gear high just about everywhere on my KX, so I'm not riding it anywhere near it's potential.. The FX450 has a extra goodies deal that includes a full factory connection suspension re valve including springs, FMF slip on muffler, map switch, extra filter... I think this is a factory incentive to move some left overs and they're dropping off the MSRP quite a bit. Hopefully getting the suspension set up for a beat up mid pack vet mxer will make it a little more MX worthy, while not completely ruining it's fine traits on the trail, I will probably spend more time play riding than racing MX. If I can get my body back into shape maybe a hare scramble is in the future too. Our local club has the 43rd annual Turkey Run.. 2hr Hare scramble Nov21st. The track used is about a 4 mile loop and pretty fast in sections, we just don't have any forests around here.. But it's always fun if you like that type of layout (http://www.jeepscycleclub.com)

Will standard bar risers fit and are taller seats available for the FX ? The dealer is about 250 miles away, but they are a KTM/Berg dealer mainly. It sounds like the engine is reliable, I'll have to get the tricks/must do's for service. Are the sprockets, brake pads anything odd ? on that CRX, were you saying the Berg is a much better bike or my current KX? (just wanting you to say the Berg..lol) Listen, thanks again, I'll post again on my decision as which direction I went on this. I need to decide soon, cuz Sometimes ya snooze, ya ......

Re: MX a FX450 for an old vet rider?

there's a lad named Bixby races MX with one here in the UK. He does it seriously as well and wins. he put factory suspension in it and has had to fit DVSKs as he was dropping valves.

he is a winner on his. I mention him in late July when at a british sidecar cross meeting. I have a thread on SCX running in race reports.

regards

I have the OEM tall seat--other aftermarket options exist if you want. I like the Enduro Engineering bar risers. You can configure them to give from 5 to 30 mm of rise. Pretty slick set up. Wear parts like pads, sprockets, etc are standard KTM. So is most of the motor. As far as if the bike is better than "this bike" don't fret too much. You are already used to riding four strokes--I think you will be happy.

I'd like to find out more about his set up and forgive me for being a little slow, but what is/are DVSK's?

Thanks again to both of you, I posted on Thumpertalk under "Exotics" and have gotten some good input as well. http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showth ... p?t=932106 I guess that's why I've always been drawn to motorcycle people, always helpful and We, the motorcycle community, know something every body else doesn't...
