Does everyone put fan & overflow on 650?

My long legged Swede was not happy with our warm temperatures. I mistakenly topped her up and ran a couple miles to downtown. Had fun ripping through traffic, especially past some jacka$$ cutting around cars in his new CL.

When I slid to a stop and parked the bike she spit out a bunch of coolant on the ground and nearly scared the heck out of me. She sounded good so I didn't think it was major.

Examination showed it came from overflow. Temperature was around 64 F which I'm guessing is 18 C.

I just received Orangeberg's weep fix so if its the waterpump bearing it will soon be fixed.

How many of you guys with 650's have a fan and/or overflow. Track guys may need nothing because I took the fan of my race GSXR.

Thanks for the feedback.

Cheers!

PS Damn! This bike dirt bike is fun in the city! I've seen the light. Hmm? Supermoto... better?

If you put a fan kit on it I doubt you will need the overflow bottle. I run the fans on all my Bergs, but it's alot hotter here and I ride alot of singletrack.

run 50/50 1050gm/L glycol to distilled water and try a 1.8 Bar rad cap off a ktm

i need to find the #PN too the 700 puts out a bit more heat than the old setup when i use the extra mumbo.

Re: Does everyone put fan & overflow on 650?

My baby spits up coolant quite easily so I'm not sure if I just spend too much time in the lower gears, being in the city, or if is just the way 650 Berg's are.

I want to make sure she gets what she needs so I can ride the way I like to, hard.

Why else would I buy a 650 Berg?

I might as well buy a frickin' Hypermotard or some KTM Supermoto.

Seems like a fan is the real answer. Riding offroad in the midwest seems to be mostly single track. Add that to the city riding and it's a lot of slipping through things with some nice blasts.

Thanks for your informed opinions.

the problem you have it because the water seal is weeping its dropping the pressure, water boil higher under pressure, so when you stop the pressure leaks from the seal causing the water to boil, fix the seal and put a overflow on. job done

KTM and 09 berg 1.8 Bar cap #PN 77335016000

it should fit, I ordered one will let you know if it doesn't

FWIW i stuck a bit of 0.6mm stainless mig wire bent into in a c shape between the cap and the spring on my 1.4 seems to be about 1.6 bar

the 50/50 coolant / water with the stock 1.4 cap was fine for my stock engine if she still blows stock K2 it'l be in slow going

Re: Does everyone put fan & overflow on 650?

swsupermoto,

I thought that may be part of the problem.

bushmechanic,

Being Down Under I would think you have extensive experience dealing with heat. Thank you for the god idea.

I would appreciate knowing if the 09 Berg/KTM 1.8 Bar cap fits and if you think it's good for the bike.

Another thing I realized this morning was that since it has been below 40F/10C when I changed the oil this week I put in 5w40 oil.

I'm not sure how much that has to do with heat dissapation?

Thanks guys. It's nice seeing what innovative things people do to overcome issues.

go for the bottle before the cap, if you release the pressure its better for the bike, it will suck the water back in when it cold. the 1.8 bar does fit but you risk it next weak pint giving.

It gets pretty hot in Southern Nevada so I went with the fan and an overflow bottle. I also run Motul's orange coolant. That combination seems to work fairly well.

If you really want to get kinky, you can run a cooling fan with Evans NPG-R coolant. It basically becomes a zero pressure system. The coolant boils at 400F @ 7 psi.
The plus side is that you will never boil over again. The negative is that you will burn the bike down before it boils over. It also does not disapate heat as well as normal coolants. It is a little pricey.
I have run it before, it works good especially with a fan. You just have to really pay attention to how hot the engine is actually getting. I like the idea of a no to low pressure system, it has to be better on the seals.
