Best Hill Climber

Which is a better hill climber my 2007 650FE or a 2009 KTM 530 XCW? I watched a very good hill climber on a modified YZ450f, its been bored to 500cc and had head work . He told me that the KTM 530 would be a better climber than my 650. I know the skills of the rider are major factor but the bike is got to be capable to. What do you think?

Let me guess. The guy who has probably never ridden either bike is giving you an opinion.

He actually jetted and tuned the suspension on my bike. He was impressed with the 650.

with the proper setup,,,that 650 is going to kill the 530. and without setup..you can still do it. That motor was and maybe is still widely used. Travis Seitz won his class, and not the beginners, at teh Widowmaker on a 650 this last summer.

check out www.aeracing.com, under gallery for some pics of a 1300, twin 650 climber from Montana.

you can turn the 530 into a 600cc+ but it will cost around 3-4Gs for a basic setup, they lighten balance and stroke the crank, machine cases/barrel and make a special liner. you would probably get a 102mm piston lightened to around 300gm and a crank weighiing 4.5kg with the rod.

your 07 650 allready has a 4.5kg crank/rod, a 272gm piston and its 628cc its already done.

from memory 530 has bigger mains and of course it has a wider usable rev range as a 510cc, on a hill the more usable rev range you have the better.

the 510cc KTM on nitrous or methanol with a blower should kill the berg. if you turn it into a 600+ bigbore (berg) with big $$$$ its only advantage really is the bigger mains. perhpas the head flows more too.

if you're going to extend the swingarm the frame should also be extended at the steering head, the KTM has a better wieght distribution thanthe berg and may not need it.

I'd use the 628 in a new frame.

Thanks for the information, I love my 650 and thought that the "no replacement for displacement" mantra would probably be the answer to my question. I also think the 650FE is lighter than the KTM which would favor the Husa on the hills to. bushmechanic I have seen pictures of those modified Husa hill climbers, pretty amazing.

no replacemt indeed and if possible better if done without having heavy moving parts like a KTM LC4 620

the 628 engine has a relatively lightweight crank and piston (lighter than the 550)

there is a pic thats embedded in a page with java so I can't save it but its a great berg frame I'll try to find the link. some others below
