Engine cases

'Won' these on ebay at the bargain price of 75 euros, shipping included. But offcourse the excitement quickly wore off after discovering that the right hand case had been welded at the swing arm hole.

Good news is I only need the left hand case, so my question, can i use my Right hand side with the left hand side from another engine, or are the cased milled at the factory as a set?

Regards, Christof.

Re: Engine cases

Don`t
Normally the cases are a pair and should not be mixed with another cases.
Mine 501 we welded in the right case swingarm hole and after 200 h there is no new cracks.
So if the cases are ok in the other "holes" so go on.

RE: Re: Engine cases

well not quite right jampe.

if you stick to ball there is enough tolerance to allow for any misalignment in the cases.

RE: Re: Engine cases

perhaps check the alignment and also how the linar/liner bore matches up

maybe a certain combination of cases has a better main bearing tunnel alignment than the "matched"ones

if thats not possible there is also the spherical roller to consider and a max capacity completely self aligning ball bearing with 1Kn less rating than a standard max capaxity ball bearing.

Finally had the time to snap some pics

Looks like the cam chain did some damage

Snapped con rod? (in case you overlook it, the thin wall between the crank space and the gearbox space has a large nick in it.)

What do you guys think? Still usable or should I just make a cool vase out of it?

the nick is nothing although it woukld still be nice to keep the crankcase seperate from the gearbox.

the camchain marks are nowt - all the 01-03s leave their mark!

welding at the s/a are always worth a try. you should have drilled a hole at each end of the crack to stop it spreading and then welded it.

My '02 cases are welded in exactly the same spot.
I read somewhere here that almost all the '02 cases have the weak spot there.

When correctly welded its no problem i guess?

i believe that the '01 cases were a problem but that the '02s were fine. if you have the first of the '02s you know what you got!
