backfiring

ive just purchased a FE650 2003, although ive had bikes before this is my first single cylinder dirt bike and i was wondering if its normal to be backfiring when i get off the throttle. correct me if im wrong but backfiring occurs when the mixture is too rich. do i need to adjust it as i think im burning through fuel pretty quickly.

In the case of these bikes it's usually a lean condition that makes them back fire.

Tell us some more about the bike. Has it been sitting for a long time? What maintenance has been done etc....

the bike did sit for a while before i got it. ive put in a new spark plug and changed the oil but thats it, on other bikes ive owned the only carb maintainence ive done has been to sync them up and adjust the idle is there anything that needs to be done special to a single carb bike?

Hey Blade...

the other guys here can cover jetting for you, but also check all the slip joints in the systems pipes and muffler, as air leaking can cause some popping, use hi temp RTV silicone to wipe a slightly raised 'gasket' inside the female section of each joint, and let partially dry - 20 mins or so, then smear some more silicone on the male section of the joint and fit together, it should go together fairly tightly. clean up with throttle body / carby cleaner.
