Question 2011 FE570 Shut Down

First off, I want to say hello to all of the Berg owners out there.
I am the proud owner of a 2011 FE570. The bike has 450 miles on it and is literally spotless and in as new condition.
The bike has starts and run flawlessly, up until yesterday.
For some reason, while idling on the side of the road, the bike shut down. I went to restart and no fire. The motor turns over as normal, just won't start.
I left the bike to go get my truck, came back 15 minutes later, decided to try a restart, and bam, fired right up like nothing ever happened.

Any thoughts, or perhaps similar experiences out there?

I plan on doing a lot of desert riding and don't want to be stuck in the middle of the desert with this gremlin.

If it has the stock fuel pump I would bet that is the problem. It likely got hot and shut down. California Cycleworks has a replacement that should hand the heat.

Jdubb75,

Thank you for the quick response. I have read other posts about the fuel pump being a weak link.

Why is that? Bad design? Location?

Sounds like a vapor lock condition if heat is the issue.

The problem seems to be the tank location and design that causes the fuel to get hotter than other bikes, and the stock pump can't tolerate this hot fuel. Header wrap and tank insulation are supposed to help, but the cure seems to be the Cycleworks pump which can tolerate the hot fuel.

I bought my FE450 new in June of '10, I currently have 110 hrs on it. The first black cap pump failed in June of '11 with 34 hrs on it, installed second black cap pump and it failed in March of '12 with 23 hrs on it, installed new brown cap pump and now have 53 hrs on it with no issues. All pumps are factory KTM and were replaced by my dealer for free.

My bike acted the same way as you described each time the pump failed.

Ok. Fuel pump on order from California cycle works. Should see it in one week.

What is the best thermal wrap for the exhaust pipe?

Same question for the fuel tank.

I just used some self adhesive heat barrier bought from Summit Racing for the underside of the tank, I never wrapped the pipe due to some people reporting that it could lead to the pipe rotting from trapped moisture in the wrap. I still have boiling issues when slow speed riding so I plan to ship my pipe to Jet Hot Coatings to have it ceramic coated.

I used DEI heat reflective tape that I picked up from my local Advance Auto. I never wrapped the pipe or got it coated. However, I did install a Trail Tech digital fan kit [732-FN8] and set it to come on at 195f if I remember correctly.

PABiker,

Would you happen to have the part number for the "brown cap" pump?

I would assume that KTM has revised the design of this pump to handle heat issues, since you are no longer having a problem.

jdubb75 Nice Tape job on the tank. Took a few minutes to figure out pic 2 that I was looking at the tank.
