2002 fe400 hanging idle

Hi all,

My fe400 has a fcr mx 39 on it. The bike is new to me and has a major problem with hanging idle. It's either reving high, or stalling. It's a real nightmare to ride at the moment.

Where should I start?

Thanks, Chris

pretty sure that if you open the Pilot Screw underneath 'out' or anti-clockwise it will go. try half a turn at a time.

it's that easy!

I've just done that. It keeps running with the fuel screw wound all the way in. How much play is acceptable in the slide? It can move up and down a little when it's in the idle position.

Can anyone comment on roughly what the jetting should be for 2000 feet?

Spray start gas around the carb. Especialy att the Rubber intake boot. And see if it revs up, if it does, it shouldnt! U have an airleak

O also tryed spraying the intake boot on mine but not result . The boot looked old and brittle so I replaced it and my hanging idle went Away . mine was intermittent , some times it would hang sometimes not .

Remove the slide and clean it out, check for any rough surface on the slide and inside the carb. Yes when you turn the screw in it should drop and out will bring up idle but this should not give random idle problems as high idle to low idle and vise versa. It sounds like your slide is not returning and a broken spring and or weak spring can cause this. Checking for a air leak it is recommended to use propane such as a torch without flame and move it around to see if idle changes, starting fluid runs very hot when ignited and can cause damage if you have a large leak area. Do you see any gas running out of the vent tubes when running?

Yes I tried turning out. Eventually it started to die off. I then wound it in and it kept running with it all the way in.
