It sounds like your slide is not returning and a broken spring and or weak spring can cause this. Checking for a air leak it is recommended to use propane such as a torch without flame and move it around to see if idle changes, starting fluid runs very hot when ignited and can cause damage if you have a large leak area. Do you see any gas running out of the vent tubes when running?
I'm thinking it is a problem with the slide not returning back all the way. Which spring are you referring to? There is a lot of play where the arm joins to the slide, between the rollers and grooves. I guess the whole slide and arm assembly could do with being replaced. I have pulled everything off and carried out a very careful inspection, I'm confident that there is no air leak between the cylinder head, manifold and carby. There is no fuel coming out the vent tubes when running.

I've dropped the needle 2 clips positions, 2 from the bottom to 4 from the bottom. It's a lot better, but not perfect.

Jetting as follows.

Needle: stock?? Currently 4th clip from bottom
Main: 152
Slow: 45
Starter: 72
Leak: 105

Slow air jet: 100 (adjustable, 1 turn out)
Main air jet: 200

that main jet....look closely, it may be a 162 but 152 is borderline. I and a bunch of Suzuki DR lads from Colarado are the only ones to get down to 152MJ as I'm aware of?

try a 42PJ and have a 40 on stand by as i think it would like the 40 as well.

It's back together in the carby now. I'm pretty sure I was 152. What should the float height be? It was parallel with the carby housing. I just assumed it was correct.

Also dropping the needle has seemed to have made a big difference. I will test ride on the weekend.

the rim to the peak on a float should be 9mm exactly but they say plus or minus 0.5mm.

to count needle clips you should hold it with the point down and then count from the blunt end downwards towards the tip. C1 is at the top and leanest and C7 is at the bottom and richest.

In that case, it was at c6 and I've changed it to c4.

Cheers for the float spec, I'll check it out.
