2000 FE600 wont start hot - especially if I drop it.

My 2000 FE600 starts fine (kick) cold with the choke on - 2nd or 3rd kick. Its ok hot sometimes. It was a problem hot but I found if I switched the fuel off before the engine it started ok - on investigation I found one float full of fuel..replaced it..needle & seat seemed ok > that improved things...BUT: When I drop it thats the end NO GO driving me friggin nuts...15-20 mins later mabe roll start. Any ideas??

welcome to UHE fella and please keep posting coz it's very quite here at present. if you don't post more i'll have to have another rant just to wind a few 'dead' people up!

you need to change the spark plug and also consider the cap.

i would buy a new needle and emulsion tube for the carb.

i would set the highest tickover i could using the fuelscrew and then reduce the tickover speed with the tickover screw.

from there i would see how it starts and operates and just turen the fuel screw 1/4 turn in either direction to help throttle opening and acceleration plus of course starting. purchasing these items should help but when a bike is nearly 6 (aussies get the new models first in the previous september) years old it could be anything.

regards

Robby, please write in often! we can't handle another rant from Taffy! As for the hard starting after dropping, you may want to verify that the float hight is correct, as well as idle speed/fuel mixture is correct. My 02 470 is very sesitive to the idle speed and low speed fuel mixture. Good luck and let us know how you do!

Bendberg,
I have a fc 470 that is a hard starter when cold,to be fair I have not spent much time with it.(riding other bikes and lately slamming my body on the ground.)I would be interested in your carb settings,if you would be so kind.....nsman

The guys in the shop had a look at the carb on this model yesterday and found that the small vent line from the choke circuit(I believe) had touched the exhaust and melted .After changing and rerouting this line bike now starts well.

Next time you drop it, remove the air filter and check for motor oil in the intake boot. If so you may want to modify your breather or learn not to drop your bike (that would be easier).
Another tip is to pull in the decompression lever, open the throttle and kick the bike through 5 or 6 times to clear any fuel out of the cylinder.

Well thanks everyone for all the feedback.

Heres what I am doing:

1) Start jet is a #45 (I have an aftermarket exhaust) - I'm changing it to a #35. It's running rich on start / idle circut because I have mixture screwed fully in = highest RPM best mix etc.

2) Floats/Float Levels/Fuel inlet Valve are all spot on.

3) The needle & seat dont seal so I'm replacing both as this would be allowing fuel in even when the throttle is closed fully.

I will let you know how it goes.
