09 FE450, hard start when hot unless choke engaged

I did some searching, but could not find any references to my problem.

I've got an 09 FE450, fuel injection. It has recently decided it doesn't like starting when it's hot. Starts OK when cold. I pulled the choke ( idle speed adjusting screw) out and it starts right away.

I just changed the injector, but that made no difference.

According to the Husaberg manual, the idle speed adjusting screw, when pulled out, only raises the idle speed. So I'm stumped.

Anyone have any ideas?

Re: 09 FE450, hard start when hot unless choke engaged

I have a `10 FE390, just got it recently, so I don't have much time on it. It had trouble starting hot, but it also had some very small hiccups/hesitation when held at constant rpm. It turned out to be a faulty spark plug, now it starts great every time, and runs without any hiccups. Interesting thing, the hot starting issue could be cured by pulling out the "choke" - which as you write just raises the idle speed. If you haven't changed your spark plug recently, might be worth trying - make sure to get the iridium version, NGK LKAR8AI-9.

Cancel my previous post, the new spark plug cured the hiccups, but not the hot start issue. For the 390 I've read opening the throttle just a few mm-s help, and sure it does for me. Try it on your 450.

Thanks. I'll change the plug anyway and see what happens.

When I crack the throttle, the bike turns over much slower. Seems like the auto-decompression disengages. It should not, as it's a simple centrifugal mechanism.

the idling is meant to be quite high, about 1800rpm I think. Try turning it up a bit, if the choke or cold start makes starting easier this could be all it is. You also need to prime the injectors by giving the starter a jab to let the fuel pump get up some pressure then start the bike, shouldn't need any throttle.

Spark plug cap gives issues on theses bikes. Always good to have a spare, I've replaced mine twice.

Got the hot idle set at 1800. But still starts hard when hot. I've had issues with the spark plug cap before. I'll replace this one and see.

Thanks,.

Hey bike53 my 09 570 was recalled to have a upgraded auto decom and cam fitted, apparently to cure hot starting/slow/hard cranking issues. Mine was a very early 09, might pay to check your vin with a dealer.

I have the same bike and am having the same problem. Was thinking about contacting Taffmeisters about it. I will keep an I on this post and let you know if I discover anything. Thanks.

Re: 09 FE450, hard start when hot unless choke engaged

I checked with the local San Diego dealer who said my bike was not part of the auto decomp recall. So I'm working on the premise that it may be an electrical issue. Maybe the spark plug cap, as previously noted.
