Re: 09 FE450, hard start when hot unless choke engaged

The plug cap is on Item I never looked at on my quest for easy hot starting, I am interested to see how it goes for you.

Re throttle opening. If you crack the throttle more air is allowed into the cylinder causing higher compression pressures.

Test the cap with a meter should be around 5K ohms. Have heard when it goes bad it still has resistance drops down to 2-3K ohms

Re: 09 FE450, hard start when hot unless choke engaged

I've been searching for the solution to a similar issue with my 2010 FE450 with 80hrs on it.

Bike starts fine when it's cold, struggles to start when it's hot, it's not the battery or how much throttle i give it, the motor turns over slowly regardless.

I think it is struggling against full compression meaning the Auto-Decomp isn't working properly.

I found this older thread that may be of some help, if i can resolve my issue i will post up the results here aswell.

Hi Guys,
Im having the same issue, 09 450, 142 hrs, 5900km.
New battery and plug, pump working fine, fluids new, valve clearances good.
Starts cold perfectly without choke.
Runs awesome as she always has. Stop for a drink etc, then struggles to start.
If I use choke, it will start, or if I'm ontop of a long hill, clutch starting works ok.
I've been reading about the decomp recall, will check into that.
Also read about a torque limiter issue.
Does anyone have a difinitive answer?
Cheers guys

when the bike is hot and you have the hard starting issue, take the seat and air filter off, open the throttle to wide open and have a look at the injector nozzle, you will see a little dribble or drop of fuel.

A new spark plug cap solved 80% of the problem.

Cracking the throttle when hot also helps.

But no definite solution to hard hot starting yet found.

I suffered with hot hard starting and some low speed stalling when hot for a year.
Usually had to bump start or wait a few minutes to cool down. Otherwise my 2009 FE450 (300 hrs with original 5 year old battery battery) started and ran perfect.
Replaced battery with a high powered Shorai Lithium and hard hot starting and stalling problems were fixed. Another 90 hrs and no hot starting or stalling problems.
