ignition timing pre 99

Hi All,

I have had few PM's lately asking how to reset the ignition timing on pre 99 engines, so here goes.
Assemble the ignition on the engine leaving the three back plate screw slightly loose.
If you look on the out circumference of the flywheel you will see two marks, there are three screws holding the ignition cover to the engine the screw hole that is near the clutch activator you should be able to see a timing mark near that.
Start rotating the flywheel in a backward direction when the first mark on the flywheel lines up with the mark on the engine this is TDC keep moving the flywheel until the second mark on the flywheel lines up with the crankcase mark when these two are lined up you should be able to put a small drill bit through the small hole on the front of the flywheel and this should locate into the recess hole on the stator if not move the backplate until it does. And thats it, remember to re-tighten the backplate screws.

i only touch the new engine from 2001 on in the DOC. i have had OYK offer to do it and not come through. i've asked several more but shall refrain from mentioning them here.

fact is if anyone wants to do a DOC on the earlier engine i and maddel would help them as much as we can but in the absence of an earlier bike i like the stimulation not to say the time to do this myself.

so i ask myself: why are there so many BWs on this site? fryguy might go as far as to call them FTs but i think it's actually borderline!
