Electric Start issues again
Hello everyone.
Hope some one can shed some light on the following .
I have a 2003 Fe501,
It will start ok kick starting. But im getting old ,so after about the fourth get off per day I would like to be able to start on the button,
So the mods I've made so far are
R6 Starter motor. New Lithium Battery. Taffys easy start carb Kit.
I am pulling the kickstarter back slightly when turning the engine over on the button to engage the decompressor as i have taken the manual decompressor off from the handlebars (I'm using that lever as the choke ).
No Luck it wont start.
I have put another spark plug on the HT lead (leaving a spark plug screwed in so it has full compression). It is generating a good spark off the button, So I assume it must be spinning fast enough.
I'm at a loss now, So any advise or ideas id really appreciate
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Have you adjusted your valves you might need to.

Thanks ,I will check them tomorrow.
Can i ask though why would it make a difference on Electric start verses Kickstart

From reading everybody stuff here that is one the thing that comes up out of adjustment harder to start and if bad enough will not start. Not that big a deal to adjust/check

Hi .
Ive checked the Valve adjustments .The inlet were tight .
I have noticed that there is no play on the inlet rocker arm up /down or side to side (when the valve screws are wound right back up) .Is this correct as there is play on the exhaust rocker arm .
I am doing the setting from a cold engine is this correct?.
Thanks again .

I think i have put a picture of the stator up?

The picture I’ve just put up shows rust on the pickups .Am i ok to sand this off without doing any damage. If so can i coat it o stop further rust?

Thanks Again

The autodecompression system should allow it to start on the button without having to use the manual or kick start activated systems. The 03's had a better autodecompression device but not as good as the 04-08 types. They were a vast improvement. If it were me I would install the 04-08 cam, autodecompression device and new ADC spring and make sure it is correctly pretensioned so that it snaps back nicely into its resting position and does not flop around. Your current ADC spring may have come unpretensioned and thereby rendering your Auto Decomp useless. At any rate is your bike truly a 2003 model? All yellow? If it is an 01 or early 02 it will be much harder to ever get it to start on the button.

Hi Husabutt
It is a 03 please see vin image. All plastics yellow.
I will take off the rocker cover box off and have a look at the decompressor
When you say instal 04 cam auto decompressor device ,Do you mean the whole cam aswell. Sounds a big job for my limited knowledge EEK.
Do you have any thoughts on the rusty Stator ,Is it ok to sand it clean. It is currently charging the battery at 14.59v at medium revs

if your decomp looks like this, you need a new one
