I Ride: 2013 FE 350
Unhappy 2013 FE350 speedo gremlins

G'day all

My speedo stopped working on a trail ride a few weeks ago - wet conditions and a heap of mud and slop. First time it has done this, despite numerous prior muddy adventures.

It started working again once bike was cleaned up and ridden on road the following week.

Yesterday on another muddy ride, speedo decided it didn't want to work again.

I have checked connections and confirm the speedo works on tarmac, after the bike has been washed again. Battery in speedo was replaced a month or so ago.

I tested the now clean bike in my garage yesterday evening by spinning the wheel when the bike was on the stand - all good.

Could it be something as simple as dirt/mud on the magnet or on sensor pick up that stops the speedo from registering movement? If so, it's a pain if it's going to stop each time it gets dirty.

Worth replacing magnet/pick up sensor?

Cheers and thanks in advance.

Look for any bare wires. Make sure the speedo is sealed (silicone it) Dielectric grease at all contact points wouldn't hurt. Both my 2011 570 ever replace the battery's on the speedos. Try spraying the pickup point at home to see if it makes it fail and then any other point one at a time to see if fails.

I Ride: FE 610 oh yea
If you mean it stops displaying your speed, I get it regularly when riding the deep river sand and water, the magnet picks up any ferrous material and the magnetic field is attenuated hence no Hall effect.
Thanks from tourist and Smash101

A close inspection of the magnet showed a collection of very small metal pieces stuck to it. A good clean and inspection of all wires and all appears to be ok.

Now for another muddy trail ride for the real test.

Yes water you say when dry it works but wet doesn't work. The water might be shorting it this would be cheap way instead of buying parts you might not need. Don't think it's the pickup magnet if doesn't work wet it won't work dry unless you clean it (wipe off dirt) first
