Overheating/Coolant Leaks FE350 .... Sort of solved

Hi

Just a quick note about some 2013 FE350 issues.

My 350 seemed to overheat very easily on any slow uphill or single track. Then it would start steaming so obviously it was boiling but the fan still wasn't on. So after a bit of testing showed that the thermo switch was not really opening quick enough as you can see in the photo. It took two mins of boiling at 100C to get it to switch on: it is supposed to turn on at 100C and then turn back off at 95C.

As an aside the overheating may have started after fitting a Akrapovic (well a professional copy of using the original exhaust) but may just have been coincidence as well cos I noticed my 2012 EXC-F350 also tended to get very hot in the slow stuff.

Long story but I found that that coolant was very weak i.e. not much additive in it so I replaced the coolant with Nulon red coolant and also replaced the thermo switch with a 90/95 version and now it doesn't overheat on the slow stuff!

The thermo switch is the same as those used in cars and the one I used was a Tridon TFS106 (Thermo Fan Switches | Tridon) but I am sure there will be equivalents in other countries.

Note: the original Husaberg thermo switch has a tapered O-ring which should be re-used on the new thermo as the socket in the radiator has a tapered sealing surface. A standard O-ring may work but a silicon would probably be better.

Note 2: I had noticed a slow but inexorable coolant loss before this last boil over. Which probably means this has been happening slowly for some time; so if slow engine coolant loss over time this "slow" thermo switch could be the problem.
